Head into the woods of the Adirondack Park.

1. Check in at the Elk Lake Lodge

Elk Lake Lodge Inc

675 Elk Lake Rd North Hudson, NY, 12855

Get Directions

The Elk Lake Lodge sits on 12,000 private acres in the pristine wilderness of the Adirondack Park. It is located in the high peaks region, with a spectacular view of of Macomb, Dix, and Nippletop mountains. This is one of my favorite places to unplug and unwind. The lodge has 6 guests rooms and 8 cabins. You need to drive 5 miles up a private road just to get here, so pack what you need. And there is no cell service.

2. The clean waters of Elk Lake.

Get started by jumping in the damn lake! Yeah, sure it might be cold, but a nice Adirondack swim will get your blood flowing.

The lodge maintains a fleet of rowboats, canoes, and kayaks for guests, and you should use them. Motorboats are strictly not allowed in Elk Lake and the water feels cleaner for it. Fishing for trout is also quite popular and some anglers even fly fish in the creek.

3. Stay in a cabin

The cabins are charming and rustic. This is life in the woods, after all. Most have fireplaces, some have kitchens, but none have phones or TVs. It's all you really need.

Meals are included at Elk Lake. They serve a hearty breakfast at 7AM, made to order, and will send you off with a brown bag lunch (with killer trail mix and cookies too). The dinner bell rings at 6PM. Yes they actually ring a bell. Wine and beer is extra, but really not much. It's all part of the experience.

5. Paddle out to Wagon Wheel Landing

Wagonwheel Landing (sort of)

Adirondack Park Schroon Lake, NY, 12870

Get Directions

Take a day trip on the lake. Jump in a kayak or canoe and head north on the lake toward Wagon Wheel Landing. If you are feeling adventurous you can connect with the Mt. Marcy trail and head up to the high peaks (not that we tried it). But if you do you REALLY need a proper trail map and should know what you are doing. If not just chill out by the water, eat your trail lunch, and listen to the loons.

6. Hit the trails

Trail head (thereabouts)

Adirondack Park North Hudson, NY, 12855

If you like to hike you will love Elk Lake. The lodge maintains their own trails and some intersect with major ADK state trails. In all of our hikes we never once saw another hiker. We did come across a frightened grouse and a massive moose (ok, there was no moose but we heard rumors about one). Please use the lodge trail maps when exploring the grounds. And bring water and snacks!

7. Take in the views from the beach

The Beach

Adirondack Park North Hudson, NY, 12855

Get Directions

After dinner a lot of people shuffle out to the beach with coffee or a drink to watch the sunset. It's quite an experience, if you are in to that sort of thing. Then you may as well pack up, head to your cabin, make a fire and start again tomorrow.
