Galway, Galway / Activities / Culture / Dining

Sometimes deserved, Irish food (like English cuisine) has always had a spotty reputation and has often been maligned. Boiled gray meats, anyone? Anyone?! With the Celtic Tiger boom of the mid-to-late '90's, Ireland has had an influx of positive culinary influences and welcome resources that have trickled its way down to their food offerings, both nouveau Irish cuisine and traditional fare. While traveling in Ireland, you can still find your boiled gray meats and all manner of potato concoctions, but thankfully you can find more places to eat that integrate more international cookery techniques that make even traditional Irish fare savory, unique and actually crave-able. Which is a good thing since Ireland is a wealth of good food resources from the best cheeses, rich organic farm-raised fruits and vegetables to the freshest of seafood.

Situated at the furthest end of Shop Street and alongside the Spanish Arch and the Galway City Museum, Ard Bia serves traditional fare but with a modern and international twist. You'll enjoy an idyllic and fine dining experience inside this seaside Irish cottage-style restaurant with spectacular views of the rushing Corrib River. Breakfasts, brunches and lunches are served in the cafe whilst dinners are provided in the great room. Enjoy buttermilk pancakes, omelettes, and savory sandwiches made with the freshest of ingredients and locally sourced from nearby farms and organic markets. Personal favorites include the local crab sandwich on homemade brown bread with caper aioli, poached pears & mixed leaves as well as the Ard Bia creamy seafood chowder made with smoked cod, seatrout, mussels & clams, and a slice of brown soda. Before dinner, guests can indulge in a civilized glass of whites, reds, roses and beer from Ard Bia's extensive drinks menu and served in their cozy wine nook.

In Galway City, a medieval town in the western coast of Ireland, you'll find during weekends a bustling market that for centuries has served as a trading outpost, meeting place and a public sounding board for its locals. Galway Market today is not so different from the market of old, as it provides fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood as well as handicrafts. A personal favorite is the Madras Curry kiosk that sells vegetarian Indian food such as a flavorful madras pea and aromatic potato curry that will have you properly fueled up for a day of shopping in Galway's Shop Street.

Although the name conjures up the worst of a Charles Dicken's novel --- pestilence and bleak, bland food, Dublin, Ireland's Gruel restaurant puts a unique, flavorful spin on traditional Irish fare like porridge, bangers and mash and corned beef in this lively eatery in the heart of Dublin's Temple Bar district. A personal favorite is their roasted chicken with rosemary fingerling potatoes.
