New York, NY / Activities / Dining / Entertainment

For discerning coffee drinkers who may want better coffee indulgences than the sludge offered at Starbucks (the GAP of coffee) and in a civilized, elegant setting, New York City and Brooklyn offers a host independent cafes for every coffee palette, budget and taste level. But one constant in this coffee crawl tour remains: you will get a superior cup of coffee... without the tedious barista nomenclature of Tall, Grande, Venti or Stanley Tucci. For this coffee connoisseur tour, we'll start in Brooklyn and work our way uptown visiting various neighborhoods hosting some of the best coffee venues around. Pace yourself for this fun and caffeine-fueled adventure into the coffee grind.

1. Blue Bottle Coffee

Blue Bottle Coffee Co.

160 Berry St New York, NY, 11211

Get Directions

Originally from San Francisco, Blue Bottle Coffee opened up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2010. I learned of Blue Bottle when I visited the San Francisco MoMa where they were the coffee provider of record for the SF MoMa Cafe. I was instantly hooked on their strong and flavorful New Orleans ice coffee --- the perfect refreshing pick-me-up for a summer's day of lots of walking. Since discovering Blue Bottle, I had to have it everyday as part of my San Francisco holiday routine. Upon returning home, separation anxiety ensued. Surely I can bring back or order online Blue Bottle grounded coffee. But nothing beats a freshly made personal cup and using the most ornate, intricate and alchemic of brewing devices --- slow cold drippers, brand new La Marzocco espresso machines and painstakingly restored 1958 Faema Urania lever espresso machines. Coffee prep becomes a curious and even theatrical experience at Blue Bottle Coffee! The result: a hearty, bold, strong and rich coffee flavor that you will most definitely remember and chosen from an extensive international coffee selection. And now, for me, Blue Bottle Coffee is conveniently located across the East River in a minimalist light-filled, former factory on a Williamsburg, Brooklyn side street. Only in NY would one commute for a perfect cup of coffee, but Blue Bottle Coffee is certainly worth the effort and the trip.

2. Ceci-Cela Patisserie

Ceci Cela Patisserie

55 Spring St, New York, NY 10012, USA

Get Directions

Located within Soho is this tiny gem of a traditional French cafe. After a little retail therapy or window shopping in the neighborhood, pop into Ceci-Cela for an aromatic French roast coffee or an espresso paired with a pastry, perhaps a croissant (voted "Best Croissant in New York City" by Seriouseats.com). The coffee selections are robust and unmistakably European, but the accompanying French pastries are the real show-stoppers. Choose from smooth creme brules, seasonal fruit tarts, light and flaky chocolate and almond croissants and buttery madeleines served by a French staff. You'll feel like you've been transported to a cafe in the Latin Quarter of Paris.

City Bakery

Traveling north, you can stop by the City Bakery for a beverage and a treat. This time, instead of a coffee, mix it up and order City Baker's famous hot chocolate. Coffee is readily available, but City Bakery has turned hot chocolate-making into a rarefied artform yielding its own annual Hot Chocolate Festival for the entire month of February. Every day of the month, you can sample a limited edition hot chocolate flavor from the decadent (caramel hot chocolate) to the sublime (bourbon hot chocolate). Every City Bakery hot chocolate is a rich and thick comforting concoction made with real gourmet chocolate with the option to top it off with a homemade fluffy marshmallow.
