The relationship may be thematic, geographical, stylistic, or historical–there is no particular constraint other than the desire to present quality work that provides an interesting context for or dialogue with a particular performance, art form, performing arts process, or Flynn activity. The gallery is open to the public on Saturdays from 11AM to 4PM, and to show patrons on some show nights.

17. Big Joe Burrell Sculpture

Big Joe Burrell Sculpture by Chris Sharp

in front of Halvorson's Upstreet Cafe, 16 Church St, Burlington, VT 05401, USA

Get Directions

On June 4th, 2010, the opening night of Burlington’s 27th annual Discover Jazz Festival, more than the sounds of music graced Church Street. Chris Sharp’s bronze sculpture of Big Joe Burrell was unveiled in front of Halvorson’s Upstreet Café. Sharp, a figurative sculptor and native Vermonter with life-long ties to the Burlington arts community, seems a fitting artist for the task of representing a local music legend. Burrell arrived in Burlington in 1976 after touring worldwide with the likes of Count Basie and B.B. King. The statue, based on a photo of Burrell taken in 2004 at a live performance in Grantham, New Hampshire, shows the musician pointing out at the crowd. He performed regularly at Halverson’s and now he stands, saxophone to his lips, watching over the vibrant creative community he helped to establish. The commemorative sculpture is a permanent reminder of his unforgettable contribution to music in Vermont.

Tree of Knowledge (1961)
by Paul Aschenbach
in front of Bailey/Howe Library, UVM Campus

Aschenbach was a Vermont sculptor best known in Burlington for Sculpture in the Community on Battery Park Extension (18). Tree of Knowledge is a welded metal sculpture depicting the tree of knowledge of good and evil from the story of Genesis. The irony of a sculpture linking knowledge to sin seems to be lost. Regardless, it is a stunning early work by a notable Vermont artist who, incidentally, went on to shape the work of many Vermont sculptors who studied with him.

Created in 2007 at the Seven Below Arts Initiative in Westford, the fiberglass, resin, and steel sculpture Brightly Colored Trees by R. Elliott Katz was installed at the Maltex Building in 2010.

The piece is five story-and-a-half tall red tree trunks that poke through the roof of the entry way in the back of the building. “By transforming natural tree trunks, with their infinite variety of earth tones and texture, into synthetic structures with colorful and super glossy surfaces, the recognizable quickly becomes surreal,” explains Katz.

Steelhead Sculptures by Kate Pond

1 Main Street, Winooski, VT 05404, USA

Part of Downtown Winooski’s revitalization is the Winooski Falls Park and River Walk, which runs along the north shore of the Winooski River. Besides the natural visual attraction of the river and the waterfalls, there are also a series of sculptures by Vermont sculptor Kate Pond: the “Steelhead” series.

These three groups of the Steelhead trout sculptures were originally installed near the Champlain Mill in the early 1980s. The steel sculptures were created with no finishing, so that they would gather layers of rust. In the early 1990s, the city painted the fish green and Pond convinced the city to let her sandblast the paint off. When work began on the redevelopment of downtown in 2002, the sculptures were removed and stowed in a garage with no advance notice.

Winooski historian and photographer Dan Higgins started searching for them in spring 2011 and found them “languishing by a fence” at Winooski Public Works. Higgins worked with staff members of the Winooski city government and the sculptures were reinstalled along the river. The three sets of two steelhead trout are back where they belong along the river and are, according to Kate Pond, “making a spring run up…the river to breed.”
