4. Rochelle Canteen

Rochelle Canteen

Rochelle School, Greater Arnold Circus, London, United Kingdom

This is a little difficult to find but those who work locally will nip in the school gates ahead of you, steal your lunch money and pull your pig tails! Nah not really, but it is worth a visit for fresh British food, much of which is grown in the school yard. It is only open during weekdays and no evenings - well, it has to do its homework sometime!

6. Hawksmoor Spitalfields

Hawksmoor Spitalfields

157A Commercial St, London, United Kingdom

Get Directions

You know when you are asked to recommend a place to eat good British beef or where to go in London to eat steak? A few years ago, I would have said maybe Florence or New York? Now, there are several places I would be proud to recommend and none more so than Hawksmoor. Named after the architect of the local church, Christchurch, Spitalfields, you will not be disappointed with any of the meat on offer and the veg.....I will stop now before I mention the cocktails... It is the original of the restaurants and I think still the best. BOOK!

7. Poppies Fish & Chips, Spitalfields

Poppies Fish & Chips, Spitalfields

6-8 Hanbury St, London, United Kingdom

Get Directions

Fish and Chips served in fake newspaper to take away or in a 1940's style cafe to enjoy in. The quality is amazing. This is a true East End food and although not even British (come on my East End Street Food tour to find out more), it was created in London (amongst other areas) and has been a universal favourite since. Saying that, good ones are few and far between! This is one of the best.......yum!

8. Tayyabs

Tayyabs

83-89 Fieldgate St, London, United Kingdom

Get Directions

Fun, frenetic, delicious, noisy, did I say delicious? Tayyabs is off the Brick Lane curry mile and is definitely worth the detour. If you are scared of crowds or noise, avoid Thursday thro Saturday nights. If you want to guarantee eating before midnight, book! The menu is limited but that means that they make everything very well. They are famous for their lamb - all of it delicious. Bring your own alcohol.
